The atmosphere in the clubhouse was electric from the moment Team Europe and Team USA arrived for this year’s Solheim Cup event. Sporting their team colours, the 32 players readied themselves for the golf. The 18-hole event was played in two halves and featured a mix of Greensomes, Foursomes and Singles.
Team Europe Captain Karen Lewis had plenty of words of encouragement for her team, as did Team USA Captains Mike Robertson and Bruce Somerville.
The light drizzle did not deter the entrants’ enthusiasm as the first groups headed out onto the course, cheered on by their teammates. Men’s Captain Bruce—although looking more like Betty in his skort—saw everyone off the first tee with flag-waving and photographs, and everyone got off to a strong start.
At the halfway stage, the leaderboard was very close, with Europe leading by one point. The players refuelled with bacon or sausage butties before heading out for their next challenge. Team USA came back strongly, winning the next 3.5 matches to take a two-point lead over Europe, 9.5–7.5, going into the final matches. Europe fought back to take the next two points and level the scoreboard, but there was no stopping Team USA, who surged to win the last three games and secure victory.
President Wendy Waite was invited to present the trophy to the winning captains, Mike Robertson and Bruce Somerville, and each member of the team received a winner’s bar of chocolate. Everyone then headed to the East Terrace for a team photograph and trophy celebration.
Thanks to Josh and his team for presenting the course in such good condition, and to Niki, Emma and the team for looking after everyone so well in the clubhouse.
